Roof-Top Tent Care and Maintenance Guidelines by Kahon Outdoors
Our commitment at Kahon Outdoors is to provide you with a rooftop tent of exceptional quality. Proper care and maintenance are paramount to ensuring its longevity and peak performance. Below, we present a comprehensive guide to help you achieve precisely that.
1 Canvas Maintenance
Upon acquisition of your Kahon Outdoors rooftop tent, we recommend an initial wetting of the exterior. This step is vital in optimizing the tent's performance during inclement weather. It allows the poly/cotton corespun thread and canvas to expand, enhancing water resistance by addressing any potential stitching irregularities.
1.1 Cleaning Canvas
Should your tent accumulate dirt or unsightly marks, adhere to the following cleaning protocol:
- Avoid the use of soap or detergents on the canvas.
- Prior to storage, ensure the tent is thoroughly dried.
- Utilize a soft brush and cold water for cleaning.
- Shield the canvas from exposure to petrol, oils, or corrosive chemicals.
1.2 Cleaning Mold
While our tents are imbued with anti-mold and mildew properties during production, in rare instances or due to improper storage, mold may appear inside. In such cases, we recommend the following:
- Allow the mold to desiccate.
- Remove surface mold using a stiff bristle brush.
- Employ a vacuum cleaner to address any remaining residue.
- Treat affected areas with a mixture of clove oil and water, available pre-mixed or prepared by adding a few drops of clove oil to a water-filled spray bottle.
2 Condensation Management
Condensation naturally occurs in cold weather. In confined spaces like tents, it can result from the moisture generated by occupants, particularly in multi-person accommodations. To mitigate condensation buildup, consider these strategies:
- During cold nights, maintain partial window openings to facilitate airflow.
- If your tent incorporates a vent above the rear entrance, maintain it in an open position.
- To absorb excess moisture, consider using moisture-absorbing silica gel pouches within your tent while traveling or during storage. These pouches are readily available and capable of absorbing approximately 40% of their weight in moisture. Reactivate them by exposing them to sunlight or using an oven.
3 Mattress Care
Moisture absorption can affect your mattress due to body sweat. During extended journeys, it is prudent to relocate your bedding away from the mattress during daylight hours to facilitate proper ventilation.
For extended non-use periods exceeding ten days, we recommend periodic tent ventilation. Optionally, you may remove the mattress and store it separately until your next adventure.
